Staff at an Aquarium in eastern Ukraine did not believe a colleague when she reported that a crocodile had swallowed her mobile phone.
Rimma Golovk was trying to take a photograph of the reptile opening his mouth when the phone slipped from her hand and was eaten by the crocodile.  It was only when the phone started ringing, and the sound was coming from inside the crocodile, that fellow employees believed her!
The 14 year old crocodile, named Gena, has been refusing food and swims much less than he used to, refusing to play with three fellow African crocodiles and may need surgery to remove the phone.
Doctors have already tried to tempt the crocodile by feeding him live quail rather than the pork or beef he usually gets.  The quail were injected with vitamins and a laxative but although Gena smothered one of the birds he did not eat it. He will be taken for an x-ray this week if he continues to refuse food but surgical removal of the phone will be a last resort since incisions and stitches usually take at least three weeks to heal in reptiles and the procedure is dangerous for the crocodile and the vets.
