Mentally ill man locked in garden shed

MADRID, June 1 (Reuters) - A woman in a remote Spanish village kept her mentally ill son locked up in a tiny outhouse for 30 years until he was discovered earlier this week by police, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

Daily El Pais said the now 92-year-old woman told police she had locked up her son, now 72, in the two-metre by two-metre (seven feet by seven feet) building after a pyschiatrist told her he could not be cured of a mental disorder.

The man was sent to a nearby mental hospital and was being kept restrained while officials monitored his behaviour.

"He was ill but I don't know with what. He was put away but they didn't treat him well and I brought him home to take care for him as best I could because I had him as a single mother and he's all I ever had," the mother was quoted as saying. "Do you think they'll give him back to me safe and sound?"

El Pais said the woman gave her son food and water through a hole in the wall. He slept on straw.

Neighbours in the village of Rubiela, a group of a dozen houses in northwestern Galicia region, said the son grew up normally but from 18 showed disturbed behaviour linked to the phases of the moon.

"Why didn't we report it? Because this was something between the two of them," one person from the village was quoted as saying.
