Conform or go to jail!!

BOSTON (AP) MAY 18, 2000 — Boston public school officials have overturned the suspension of a student who was disciplined for writing a horror story in which a student attacked his high school English teacher with a chain saw.

The three-day suspension of Charles Carithers, a junior at Boston's prestigious Latin Academy, was overturned Friday.

School hearing officer Joseph J. Smith found that Carithers' teacher correctly reported the story as a possible threat of bodily harm. However, he said officials should have considered other factors, including the boy's record and school performance, in deciding punishment.

Students were assigned to write a descriptive horror story about a mysterious person. They were told no subject was off limits.

Carithers wrote about a fictional high school student who wanted to kill his English teacher, and apparently did so. But in a surprise ending, it was the character's aunt who died.

Last year, a 13-year-old boy in Ponder, Texas, spent five days in jail for writing a Halloween essay that involved the shooting of two students and a teacher. The case eventually was dropped.
